Cat Whisker probe tips in various materials and contact diameters, down to 0.2 µm dia or 0.1 µm tip radius. Probe tips are mostly supplied in boxes of 10, some come in 5 per box. Attachment of the much thinner tungsten wire to the shank is by welding, soldering, or crimping.
The shank can be steel or copper alloy, typically nickel plated.
Because of the smaller wire diameter, compared to solid tungsten’s 20 mil (0.5 mm), manufacturing an extremely small tip radius down to 0.1 µm is possible, using a relatively low cost etch process.
The extreme flexibility of the attached tungsten wire is sometimes not wanted and can be controlled by selecting a tip with a larger diameter wire. For example tips with 0.2 µm radius are available using 10 µm (PSETCW204) or 76 µm (2 mil, PSACW7602) wire, significantly differering in stiffness. 127 µm (5 mil) wire is available (PSETCW207) but smallest tip radius is then 0.35 µm, mainly limited by the etch process.
